Navigating the Roads of Jamaica: My Car Rental Experience

When traveling to Jamaica, renting a car is an excellent way to explore the island’s beauty at your own pace. However, it’s not just the tropical vibes and breathtaking landscapes that are different—it’s also the driving! Coming from the U.S., where we drive on the right side of the road, adapting to Jamaica’s left-side driving is very important. We reserved a car from Budget and the glasses are tinted. We had to drive with Windows Open

Local Tips:

  • Observed local drivers to better understand road etiquette, such as honking lightly as a friendly way to signal or alert.
  • Avoided driving in busy areas during peak hours until you feel more confident.
  • Watchout for Pot Holes and Uneven surfaces

Arrival and Visa Stamping Process

  1. Smooth Entry:

    • Landed at Norman Manley International Airport in Kingston and was warmly welcomed by the island's tropical vibes.
    • Checked into the hotel and ensured I had everything ready for the visa appointment.
    • There is a Coconut Shop named "Going Nuts" right outside the airport and the guy is very welcoming. Drink a coconut for around 250 Jamaica Dollars and its refreshing
    • Please do fill C-5 Form before entering Jamaica to save some time at immigration

An Average Stay at ROK Hotel Jamaica, Kingston

My experience was a mix of highs and lows, leaving me neutral about recommending it. Here's an honest review for those considering it for their visit. Its 30 Min away from Embassy. I would recommend taking closer to Embassy. Please include breakfast while booking hotel else its 28$ per head

The Positives

  1. Onsite Parking for 11$ USD a night

  2. Its managed by Hilton a Known Brand
  3. Ocean View Rooms

The Not-So-Great

  1. While the rooms were modern, there were minor maintenance issues, such as slow drains or finicky air conditioning.

  2. The bathroom doors are not great
  3. There are no exhaust fans
  4. Value for Money:

    • While the hotel is visually appealing, the rates felt slightly high compared to the overall experience.

My H1B Visa Interview Experience in Kingston, Jamaica

My recent H1B visa stamping experience at the U.S. Consulate in Kingston, Jamaica, was smooth and efficient. Here’s a detailed account that might help others planning their trip.

Same-Day Biometrics and Interview

One of the standout aspects of the Kingston consulate is that both biometrics and the visa interview can be completed on the same day. This setup is incredibly convenient, saving time and eliminating the need for multiple trips.

The Visa Interview Process

The consulate staff were professional and well-organized. After completing my biometrics, the interview process was straightforward, and I received confirmation of my visa approval., My interview happened Tuesday Morning and I picked up my passport on Tuesday afternoon at 1 PM. If your passport is not expedited, typical processing time is 4-5 business days and you would have to collected it in the post office that's couple of blocks beside embassy.

Passport Processing

Although not mandatory, the consulate expedited my passport, which was a pleasant surprise. If your case doesn’t qualify for expedited processing, expect to receive your passport by Friday if your appointment is on a Monday. This timeline is helpful to consider when planning your stay in Jamaica.

My Recommendation

If you’re scheduling your visa appointment:

  • Monday morning is the ideal day for your interview.
  • If your passport isn’t expedited, plan to receive it by Friday of the same week.
  • Make sure flight ticket is booked in such a way that it can be easily rescheduled.

Key Notes and Tips

  1. Cellphones and Electronics Prohibited:

    • The embassy does not allow cellphones or other electronic devices inside.
    • Be prepared to leave them in your vehicle or with someone you trust.
  2. Convenient Parking:

    • We parked our car right in front of the embassy in a paid parking lot. This was convenient and saved time, especially for early appointments. Also there is Starbucks in walkable radius as well

Final Thoughts

The process in Kingston is efficient, and the added convenience of same-day biometrics and interview is a significant advantage. While expedited processing isn’t guaranteed, it’s worth noting that the consulate staff are accommodating when possible.

If you’re considering Kingston for your H1B visa stamping, it’s a great choice. Just be sure to schedule wisely and plan your travel around the processing timeline.

Some Decent Restaurants if you are looking for some Indian Food

Bombay Darbar
Saffron Indian Restaurant
Devon House

Currency Exchange

I would recommend using travel credit cards such as Chase Sapphire because we used Currency Exchange at Airport which gave 124 JMD for 1 USD. We used a bank in front of ROK Hotel which gave 135JMD for 1 USD while Sapphire gave 156 for 1 USD when swiped or tapped. Also Chase Sapphire Reserve gives you Rental Insurance Protection in Jamaica. But its just CDW not the whole coverage

A Special Dedication

This incredible travel experience wouldn’t have been the same without the company of two amazing friends who joined me on this journey. From navigating the streets of Kingston to enjoying the beauty of Jamaica, their camaraderie and spirit made every moment memorable. This post is dedicated to them for being the best travel companions anyone could ask for.
